Specifications for Motorola’s ‘X Phone’ leak, show latest Android but no Full HD

Motorola has a new Android smartphone in the works and judging by the way it has already confirmed the device’s existence, it’s going to be making a big deal about it when it finally launches. Known as the Moto X or X Phone, the device has been thought to be Motorola’s next iPhone rival. However, recently leaked specifications would suggest otherwise.

Our favourite Twitter tipster @evleaks posted the specs for Moto’s mystery phone recently, claiming it will sport a 720p HD display – unlike the majority of its rivals, who are now using Full HD 1080p screens. Inside the phone there’s said to be a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip running at 1.7GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

On the back of the phone is a 10 megapixel camera and up front a 2 megapixel snapper for video calling and such. We’ve not seen a 10 megapixel camera phone sensor too often so this detail raised a few eyebrows at Gadget Helpline HQ – we’re used to 8 megapixels, then 12 or 13 megapixels when it comes to smartphones. Finally, as we might have guessed from Google’s buyout of Motorola, the phone will run the very latest version of Android; Jelly Bean 4.2.2.

This tipster has already leaked details about Moto’s upcoming phone, sharing spy shots of the phone in the flesh via their Twitter page. At the time the phone appeared to be disguised in a generic black square case but did sport AT&T branding and apps, as well as a very stock-looking Android OS.

It’s not so surprising that the X Phone will sport a 720p HD display as Motorola chiefs have said they will aim to bring a phone that’s “just the right size” to market, rather than a large 5-inch plus device as Samsung, Sony and others have done. It’s thought that the sweet spot in terms of smartphone size is between 4.5 and 4.7-inches and Full HD screen panels in this size aren’t too common. Perhaps Moto is having to sacrifice the latest screen tech in order to build the size of phone it feels customers like best, which wouldn’t be a terrible thing.
