Microsoft to Introduce Klingon to Bing Translator to Celebrate Star Trek Into Darkness

May 14, 2013

If you’re an avid Trekkie like this Gadget Helpline blogger the ability to instantly translate English into Klingon is something you’ve probably been dreaming of since childhood and through the invention of the internet and thanks to Bing – the Microsoft owed web search engine – we will finally be able to bridge this language barrier just as the latest movie adventure Star Trek Into Darkness lands in the United States this Thursday!

Adding Klingon to the translation feature in the Bing search engine will be the product of a partnership between Microsoft and Paramount Pictures to promote the new sci-fi flick which sees the U.S.S Enterprise crew’s most fearsome alien foes return to the Star Trek universe joining Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and Scotty on the big screen for the first time since the franchise received the JJ Abrams’ directorial treatment back in 2009.

The warrior race may have a slightly reimagined appearance from what we’ve known throughout the previous 10 movies and numerous TV shows but the Klingon dialect is still as aggressive and throaty as ever and as a response to the ‘pop culture relevance’ of Star Trek Into Darkness, Bing translation will be supporting 41 languages including English and French into Klingon and vice versa when it goes live this week.

The Klingon language was first used on screen by original Scotty actor, the late great James Doohan in Star Trek: The Motion Picture back in 1979 and has since been formed into a full language and a Klingon dictionary was created by expert linguist Marc Okrand with courses available the world over for those wishing to learn the warrior tongue!

But despite Bing offering the correct spelling translation for famous Klingon war cries such as “Today is a good day to die” (“Heghlu’meH QaQ jajvam” – so you know) the actual pronunciation will still be up to us to decipher!

We’re look forward to having fun making up some alien Facebook statuses when Bing goes Klingon this week! Qapla!

BlackBerry 10.1 update rolling out to BlackBerry Z10 as of today

May 14, 2013

Z10 Bluetooth

BlackBerry 10.1, the first major update for the BlackBerry 10 system, will be arriving on Z10 phones as of today. The company confirmed it will be rolling out the update around the world from today at its BlackBerry Live event in Florida, this afternoon.

BlackBerry 10.1 will bring about a number of changes, improvements and additions, which we’ve previously detailed. One of the more notable additions is a HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode for the camera which should help with the phone’s decidedly average performance in low light.

Another addition is Pin-to-Pin messaging which allows BlackBerry device users to message each other with maximum security. This feature ties in with the new BlackBerry Hub and messages can be read alongside BBMs, emails and texts.

The 10.1 update will also make the BlackBerry Z10 compatible with the Skype for BlackBerry 10 app, at long last. Skype is available currently on the Q10 and is ready and waiting for Z10 owners once they’ve updated. The app is still classed as a preview however, so there’s likely to be a few bugs and glitches that will need ironing out.

The BlackBerry Z10 was the first phone to run BlackBerry 10 and has since been joined by the BlackBerry Q10, which runs 10.1 out of the box. Now the original will be catching up as the upgrade arrives over the coming weeks.

BlackBerry says that the update will be available on most Z10s before the end of the week, although those in the US will be left waiting until the end of the month, unfortunately.
